Time To Kick The Oil Habit

oil spill

As President Obama will address the nation on the environmental catastrophe created by the explosion of the Deep Horizon oil rig this week, it’s time we as a country must decide on finding an alternative to oil.

Off-shore drilling can still be extremely useful, but more funds and research needs to go into reliable, alternative energy, such as solar, wind, and electric.

Drilling for oil has a lot of benefits and uses, but there are two reasons why we need to kick our oil habit. One, it can have dangerous results, such as the oil spill that we have seen. Media coverage of this has shown the world the type of environmental damage that this type of an accident can cause.

Another reason to stop using oil and finding a reliable source for energy is that we can finally stop being at the mercy of the Middle East. Many Americans will agree that America should not have to depend on another country for its fuel for a wide variety of reasons.

So in order to protect our planet and to stop being dependent on other nations, our country needs to push the research of alternative, cheaper fuel and energy. Electric and hybrid cars have been greatly improved since they first came out, but more work needs to be done until they are entirely efficient to the needs of most Americans.

Many Americans have started to reap the benefits of converting their homes to solar energy and even windmill power, but some have found it to be rather expensive to install and won’t see a return on their investment until years later in some cases.

And that is why we need to make these alternative sources not only more reliable, but cost effective as well.

While America should continue to drill for oil, it should also pursue other avenues for cleaner, cheaper, more dependable sources of energy so one day we don’t have to drill anymore.
